Messier Marathon 2027: dates, best nights and how to do it

A Messier Marathon is an attempt to see all 110 objects in Charles Messier's catalog in a single night, from dusk to dawn. It only works around the New Moon in mid-March to early April, when the Sun sits in a stretch of sky with almost no Messier objects, so nearly the whole catalog is above the horizon at some point during the night.

FAQ

When is the Messier Marathon in 2027?

New Moon is March 8, 2027 (1:29 AM Pacific). The best night is Saturday March 6–7, 2027; Saturday–Sunday March 13–14 is a backup, but the crescent Moon washes out the western evening objects. Early April (New Moon April 6) also works, mainly from southern US latitudes.

Can you see all 110 Messier objects in one night?

From roughly 20 to 35 degrees north latitude, yes, around the March New Moon. Southern California is well placed, though M74 and M30 are very hard in twilight.

What telescope do I need for a Messier Marathon?

Any 4- to 8-inch telescope can show all 110. A GoTo mount like the Celestron NexStar SE or Evolution saves a lot of time.
